Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Piezo-inductive principle [8]

Such devices are used as hydrophones in underwater acoustics and in monitoring dynamic loads imposed on structures adjacent to hydraulic machinery (e.g. stall or cavitation tests), as well as monitoring pressures in shock tubes and in high-pressure vessels, and reactor vessels (e.g. indication of internal combustion engines). They are generally more durable but less sensitive than condenser microphones. They are also used as accelerometers in vibration studies.

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
