Fluid Mechanics Measurements

TRADITIONAL MEASUREMENT OF VOLUME FLOW RATE

The volume flow rate – and, with knowledge of the fluid density, the mass flow rate – is one of the most important subjects of flow measurements. The reason is that the measurement of the flow rate, and -, with its temporal integration,- the amount of fluid, is directly connected to the economic and financial aspects of the related flow process (e.g. accounting measurements of petrochemical or other process industrial products, clean water, waste water or natural gas in household applications). In addition, the amount of fluid is a basic technological parameter in process industry. For example, the amount of liquid reagents having a role in a chemical reaction determines the features of the resultant compound.

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
