Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Local quantities, flow structure data

A local quantity is defined herein as a quantity characterising the local behaviour of fluid flow in a confined element of space. For example, the spatial distribution of air velocity (local quantity) downstream of an HVAC air diffuser is of interest from the viewpoint of R&D, aiming at improving the heat transfer and human comfort characteristics. Considering the operation of the fan driving the air, the volume flow rate (global quantity), related to this velocity distribution as an integral feature, is of practical importance.

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
