Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Principle and layouts

A turbine wheel is included in a cylindrical casing (Figure 7.28). According to the fluid flow at a mean velocity v, the turbine wheel of blading of mean radius r rotates at a speed of nR. The blade stagger angle, i.e. the angle between the axial direction and the blade camber line, is γ. If one assumes, as a rough approximation, that the relative flow is parallel to the blade camber line, the following relationship can be established by Eq. (7.22):

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
