Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Extension of a food industry cooler system

The cooling demands being present in a food industry plant had been fulfilled by a central cooling plant. The technological development as well as the extension of production capacity of the plant necessitated an increase of cooling capacity, by means of supplementing the original cooler with a new one. Since the two coolers must collaborate reliably, an important issue is the appropriate control of the new cooler, in terms of control of the volume flow rate of the cooling liquid through its heat exchanger, and monitoring the temperature of the liquid at the inlet and outlet ports of the heat exchanger. The following concept has been outlined for fulfilment of the above demands.

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
