Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Development of an axial flow jet fan of long throw

The throw of a jet produced by an axial flow jet fan is defined as the distance at which the peak jet velocity (i.e. the air velocity measured along the rotor axis) has fallen to 0.5 m/s [54]. The high jet momentum produced by jet fans of long throw is utilised e.g. in fog cannons [55] used in industrial dust-laying and stink elimination. A fog cannon is illustrated in Figure 8.6.1. An annular nozzle is supplied with water of pressure order of magnitude of 100 bars, and produces a multitude of water droplets of mean diameter 10 microns. The annular nozzle is located at the periphery of an axial fan, and the jet of long throw transports the water droplets to a great distance.

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
