Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Investigation of a chemical industrial solvent supply system

In a chemical industry plant, several types of solvents are used. The solvents are distributed toward the technological reactors from a central reservoir plant. A typical fluid machinery for liquid handling in the chemical industry is the pump with magnetic clutch, for which some schemes are presented in Figure 8.13.1. By means of the magnetic clutch, torque is transmitted from the driving electric motor to the pump impeller without any solid contact. Therefore, motionless sealing surfaces can be realised, and static seals can be applied, thus eliminating the risk of leakage (which is "natural" in the case of classic moving sealing techniques, e.g. a slip ring). With such pumps, a fully closed transport technology can be realised even for the aggressive and toxic liquids that occur frequently in the chemical industry.

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
