Institutions of Economic Policy

A Comparative Analysis

On big business agents – private and not-that-private

Multinational corporations (MNCs) are known to wield global power due to their size and economic importance. They are global players without having public mandates or formal responsibilities. There is a huge literature on the impact of MNCs on third-world economies and societies. We need to mention here that their existence in a given economy will influence the modalities of the institutions of economic policy-making. National regulators will have a special rapport with giant MNCs, for their economic importance, and (frequently) the political support behind them from foreign governments. Thus, the presence of big firms shapes regulatory practice, and these big firms sometimes act as trendsetters in what amounts to best practices in the local economy.
