Embryonic connective tissue

All connective tissues originate from mesenchyme, which is the fist one to appear in the embryo during ontogenesis. Its spindle-shaped mesoblast cells form a three-dimensional network with processes contacting similar processes of neighboring cells. Mesoblasts are pluripotent cells, dividing and differentiating continuously. Extracellular matrix is poor in fibers, and most of the intercellular space is filled with a viscous ground substance.
