Neurons

Basic characteristics of the neuron – as the functional unit of the nervous system – are excitability and impulse conduction capability. Neurons are highly specialized to receive information from their environment. Information arrives usually from other neurons or receptors. The nerve cell then converts incoming stimuli to electric impulses and conduct the integrated information to other neurons, muscle or gland cells Au. Extended conjunctional system provides wide communicational possibilities within the nervous system. This network makes possible for the organism to respond as a whole to continuous external and internal changes. Specialized contacts between neurons that provide for transmission of information from one neuron to the next are called synapses.
