"I love print books, but I have to admit that the main merit of handbooks nowadays is that I can put them on the shelf, and I am happy about this. The future undoubtedly lies in digital publishing. I myself prefer to use digital editions too, especially when it comes to journals, which I read exclusively in digital form."

Why Is MeRSZ a Smart Library?

We are constantly improving MeRSZ. Its capabilities far surpass those of other e-book solutions currently available. It has an adaptive and consistent look across all digital devices and environments. The system can efficiently display complex texts with detailed diagrams, tables, formulas, links, and other special elements (such as multimedia content).

The publications can be continuously updated and are protected against unauthorized use.

Features for working with the texts:

  • Marking favorites
  • Organizing works and images into custom folders
  • Smart search system:
    • Predictive search across the entire database or within the text of individual works
    • Filtering results
    • Recommending similar search terms
    • AI-supported image search
  • Customizable navigation within publications
  • Text highlighting in four different colors
  • Adding bookmarks and notes
  • Offline use

The content can be navigated in a fast and convenient way. Accurate and fast access to relevant information is aided by the possibility of searching the entire database or just a single publication. Customized bookmarks and notes can also be added.

Free publication

By publishing on MeRSZ, Akadémiai Kiadó offers its authors a full-fledged, free publishing opportunity.

Authors only incur publication costs if the work is published in open access format, or if the author requests customized publication needs (e.g. a significantly higher number of figures and images than usual, an additional round of peer review, or a print edition) that require author financial contributions.

Unlimited Distribution

As the leading content provider for Hungarian higher education, we provide wider distribution and greater visibility for handbooks than ever before. MeRSZ reading statistics show that the works published on the site reach a significantly wider audience than print editions ever could. In 2024, our smart library had 222,000 active users, who viewed almost 8 million pages.

Statistics of Institutional Use

Nationwide Coverage

MeRSZ is available at most higher education institutions in Hungary, in national, city, and county libraries, as well as at most universities and colleges offering Hungarian-language programs abroad.

Instead of imitating the visual layout of traditional formats, MeRSZ focuses on flexibility and takes full advantage of the possibilities offered by online publishing. The novel display also requires a new approach from both the publisher and the authors. Our prospective authors are advised to consult our existing publications in their own scientific field before submitting their manuscripts in order to learn more about the features and formalities of digital display optimized for multiple platforms. Detailed information on the preparation of manuscripts is provided in the Author’s Guide, and our guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence are summarized in our AI Policy.

Print Edition

Although we consider digital publishing as our primary focus, there is still a demand from our authors for print editions. Therefore, we designed our publishing workflow to ensure that manuscripts accepted after professional and format reviews can be quickly and efficiently published in print version as well, in addition to the digital version.

Features of the print edition:
  • template layout,
  • B5 format,
  • 1+1 color printing,
  • paperback with glued binding.
  • We offer distribution primarily through our webshop. We can ensure continuous availability via print-on-demand.
Cost of the print edition:
  • HUF 780,000 + 27% VAT for manuscripts not exceeding 20 author’s sheets.
  • We will provide a custom price quote for manuscripts exceeding 20 author’s sheets, or in case of special requests (e.g., color pages, hardcover).

Open Access

In MeRSZ, Open Access publication is available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

Cost of Open Access publication:
  • HUF 1,900,000 + 27% VAT

In accordance with the agreement between the Electronic Information Service National Programme (EISZ) and Akadémiai Kiadó, scientific monographs and edited volumes authored or edited by researchers affiliated to institutions subscribing to MeRSZ may be exempt from Open Access fees, up to the limit of a defined annual quota. For further details please contact your publishing editor upon acceptance of your manuscript.

ORCID iD

ORCID iD, the Open Researcher and Contributor iD, is a unique, personal, persistent identifier that can unambiguously identify researchers.

Advantages of using ORCID iD:
  • It distinguishes between common names.
  • It follows name and institution changes.
  • Authors and their publications can be linked unambiguously.
  • It is free of charge and easy to use.

ORCID iD is an internationally accepted identifier. A growing number of publishers no longer accept manuscripts to be published without ORCID iDs. Some institutions provide their researchers with ORCID iDs, while others require them to register individually.

Creating an ORCID iD is extremely quick and easy:
  1. Register here. Registration is free of charge and takes only a few minutes.
  2. Fill in the required information, and link your ORCID iD with your other existing IDs and profiles (e.g., SCOPUS, ResearcherID, Web of Science, LinkedIn, or MTMT).
  3. Use your ORCID iD. Post it on your website, provide it when submitting manuscripts and applying for scholarships, or during any other academic activity.

If you are unsure whether your ORCID iD already exists, try searching for your name in both accented and unaccented versions.
Detailed information in English can be found on the ORCID website.
A Hungarian description was published in the the 3rd issue of Könyvtári Figyelő in 2017.

Submit a Manuscript

We kindly ask you not to submit your manuscript by email. Please use the online manuscript submission system available at the link above, so you can track the status of your manuscript during the review phase. Please note that using the manuscript submission system requires a separate registration, as it operates independently from mersz.hu. Please upload your manuscript prepared in accordance with the Author's Guide preferably as a single file. Please submit all clearly identifiable image files compressed into a single .zip archive.

A key advantage of online publishing is that there is no limit on the number of available copies. Thus, a single work can be read by tens of thousands of users simultaneously. Availability is not restricted by bookstore inventory, library copy counts, or geographical distance at all. In addition, we ensure the broad accessibility of MeRSZ in higher education and research communities with the help of the EISZ National Program (Elektronikus Információszolgáltatás Nemzeti Program – Electronic Information Service National Programme).
