Decision Making Methods in Transportation

Step 3: Generating the table

The simplex table is applied to execute row operations in the matrix of linear problems’ standard form. The table contains coefficients related to the linear constraint variables and the constant parameters of the objective function. The bolded header of Table 1 represents the column under the top row. The two rows under the header contain the investigated variable coefficients of the constraining equalities, and the objective function variable coefficients are represented in the last row. If we maximize function Z, we have to write its coefficients in the simplex table with the opposite signs (however, if we have to maximize Z, we have to write 1 in the last row of column ’Z, and if we have to maximize ’-Z, we have to write (–1) in the last row of column ’Z’).

The content of the book fits to the teaching program of the subject titled ‘Decision making methods’ taught at Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) Faculty of Transportation Engineering and Vehicle Engineering. The book firstly introduces the most frequently applied general approaches of solving linear optimisation problems and then discusses a few special decision support models. In the course of the investigation the book discusses the models from theory to practice, especially considering transportation related problems and models. The introduced models can efficiently support transportation related decision making processes. Therefore, it can fructify for its readers in the field of transportation management, transportation process coordination and transportation system operation.
