Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Study on the effect of flow rate measurement noise in a natural gas supply line

In a simplified modelling set-up, a natural gas mining and transportation system consists of the main components represented in Figure 8.10.1. The gas is extracted from an underground gas well, and is transported through a pipeline. A flowmeter provides information on the actual gas volume flow rate measured in the piping. The signal of the flowmeter is utilised in the gas flow control system. The flow rate prescribed as user demand appears as a basic signal. The difference between the basic signal and the sampled flowmeter signal acts as an ordering signal. This ordering signal is conditioned by means of a PI controller, and is used in the actuation of a control valve, e.g. a latching valve, in a control loop. The user, representing a prescribed outlet pressure from a fluid mechanics point of view, receives the gas at a volume flow rate according to the control demands.

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
