Tissue definition and classification

The previous „Cell biology” chapter has introduced the cell that is known as the basic functional unit of a multicellular organism. Human body is composed of about 50 billion cells. Aggregates of these cells with their surrounding extracellular components exhibit a recognizable pattern of organization that is called tissue. A tissue is an ensemble of cells often with similar structural characteristics, from the same origin, that together carry out a specific function. Organs are then formed by the functional grouping together of multiple tissues. The human organism is composed of organs that are functionally integrated.
