Surface covering epithelium (epithelium superficial)

Classification of surface covering epithelium (Figure 48.) is based on the shape of the cells and the number of cell layers. Therefore simple and stratified types may be distinguished. Simple epithelium contains only one layer of cells on the basement membrane, while stratified epithelium contains more layers. Simple epithelium, according to cell shape may be squamous (flatterned), cuboidal (similar width, depth and height) or columnar (cylindrical). Stratified epithelium is classified according to the cell shape of its outermost superficial layer: squamous, cuboidal, columnar or transitional (urothelium).
