Foreword

We are pleased to present the 13th volume of our series entitled Applied Linguistics in the 21st Century. We are genuinely excited to publish another monograph in English, as we believe it will contribute to the internationalization and broader recognition of research results from Hungarian contexts. Coincidentally, Rita Divéki’s work delves into a quintessentially international topic – the ways global competence can be developed in the Hungarian EFL classroom. We believe little justification is needed to explain the importance of this research topic. The monograph showcases the results of an exceptionally robust research study. It not only provides an overview of global education in general and the role of global education in the EFL classroom including teachers’ influences but also investigates the views and practices of university tutors and secondary school teachers. The mixed-methods investigation left no stone unturned, and it is commendable that a classroom-focused phase was implemented even in the face of COVID-related challenges. Rita created several worksheets that can be directly used in the ELT classroom to develop students’ global competences (for details, the interested reader should visit the author’s website: https://gcdinelt.wixsite.com/mysite), filling a clear teaching niche. We believe that this monograph will be of interest to teachers, researchers, stakeholders, and hopefully, decision-makers as well.
