For comparison, two movies with very similar backgrounds and topics have been selected: the Hungarian movie Made in Hungaria and its English subtitles are analysed, and The Boat That Rocked, where both the Hungarian dubbing and the English subtitles (the only one available online) are involved in the comparison.

The choice of the movies was based on the immense similarity of the two: both movies were released in 2009, therefore, quite expectably, the translators’ choices of translation methods were influenced by the same traditions of translation of the era; the characters are rather young people, so their language presumably has the same effect on their original target audience; and the main topic is the pop/rock of the late 1960s, with the protagonists standing up against the government – so the majority of the realia are connected to popular music and politics. The content ratings of the two films are slightly different: for the Hungarian movie, it is 12 years of age, for the British film, it is 16, owing to the stronger sexual content and violent language, but this is not likely to significantly influence the translation of the realia. The “only” difference between the two movies relevant from our point of view is the direction of translation: Made in Hungaria goes from Hungarian to English, The Boat That Rocked from English to Hungarian.
