Upon aggregating the results, there was no need to take into account the number of items considered in each film, as

  2. our main focus was not on particular numbers, but on trends that either point towards domestication, foreignisation, or neutral translation.

In total, 48 items were analysed in Made in Hungaria, and 42 items in The Boat That Rocked. The summed value of the HU2EN translation methods applied is -58 in the case of the Hungarian movie Made in Hungaria, displaying a very strong tendency toward domestication (see Table 5); and very close to 0, namely, 8 and -11 in the two different translations in The Boat That Rocked, which supports if not a foreignising, but at least a (more) neutral approach to translation (see Table 6).

The numbers shown in the Hungarian dubbing correlate with Hortobágyi’s remark (Hortobágyi 2010) that Hungarian television has a very strong preference to dub foreign movies (over subtitling), and in the case of foreign realia, cultural substitution tends to be the most frequently applied translation method. However, whether the difference in the tendency towards the two poles in the two translations derives from the translators’ different approaches or the different expectations in subtitling or dubbing would serve as a great platform for further research, but this aspect is not in the focus of the present paper.

Consequently, we can say that our hypotheses were partly confirmed.

  1. In the case of proper names related to the SC, borrowing will be the translation method most often used in EN2HU translation. – Confirmed.
  2. The predominating method in translating proper names HU2EN will not be strongly foreignising methods. – Confirmed.
  3. In EN2HU translation, foreignisation will predominate. – Confirmed.
  4. In HU2EN translation, domestication will predominate. – Partly confirmed. Although there is no clear tendency to domesticate the Hungarian culture-related realia, it is obvious that the tendency to foreignise is far less strong than the other way round.
  5. In the case of proper nouns, the proportion of borrowing will be significantly higher than in common nouns or other. – Confirmed.
  6. In common nouns, foreignisation will be dominant in both directions of translation. – Confirmed. Most instances were translated either with cultural substitution or omissions.
