Several steps were taken to ensure the ethical conduct of the research project. Firstly, prior to data collection, I asked for the informed consent of the participants. In Study 2, consent was obtained in the introductory part of the questionnaire, where participants gave their consent by proceeding with the questionnaire. As for Studies 1, 3, and 4, the participants were sent a consent form to sign prior to data collection, and this form was also read to them at the start of the data collection process. In Phase 2 (Studies 3, 4, and 5), which focused on practices in specific schools, the approval of the school principals was also obtained. As for Study 5, where the participants were children under the age of 18, I first consulted with the teacher participants whether I needed to ask for parental consent; they advised that as long as the school principal consents to the students participating in the study and parents are informed about the research with the option to withdraw their children from the study, no explicit consent is needed. There was one parent in School C who opted their child out from the questionnaire study.

The consent forms contained a short description of the aims of the study, the tasks the participants were required to do, the voluntary nature of the participation, the right to withdraw at any time, the assurance of confidentiality, and information on how, where and for how long the data would be stored (Dörnyei, 2007). All of these forms had been previously reviewed and approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Language Pedagogy and English Applied Linguistics PhD Programme, when these were handed in as part of the Application Form for Research Ethics Approval. The English translations of the consent forms are attached in Appendix O.

The collected data were anonymised and coded, with pseudonyms used to protect the participants’ identities. When presenting the data and providing thick description, I aimed to include just enough detail to protect the anonymity of the schools and participants. All the collected data were stored in a safe place accessible only to me.
