Market and Credit Risk Management

The Huge Loss of Metallgesellschaft

The USD 1.3 billion loss suffered by Metallgesellschaft in 1993 was the biggest corporate loss in Germany’s post-war history. It was caused by the German conglomerate’s US subsidiary (MGRM) in a hedge deal gone wrong. The problems stemmed from MGRM’s attempt to hedge its long-term contracts for the sale of oil products by entering into a series of short-term forward contracts, using a so-called ‘rolling hedge’ strategy, in order to protect against price increases. The fall in short-term oil prices imposed on the company huge additional margin requirements. As a result, the company’s management decided to sell the contracts. In effect, the loss on the open positions was realised. Only a stabilisation package of around EUR 2.4 billion, led by Deutsche Bank, saved the company’s empire.
