Subprime Mortgage Crisis

The global crisis that started in the summer of 2007 in the US mortgage market has a specific feature compared to the crises discussed above, in that it is not linked to emerging markets, but was caused by developments in the world’s most developed financial markets (US, UK).1 The contagion in the ‘peripheral’ countries occurred without their having had any direct exposure to mispriced financial products. The negative effects of the crisis were transmitted to these countries through liquidity problems due to the crisis of confidence in the financial system and a dramatic deterioration in risk appetite. Foreign investors, directly affected by the effects of the crisis, had sought to finance their losses due to liquidity problems in their home countries by withdrawing capital.
