Common nouns with Latin origins

Words have an influence on the reader not only through their meaning or the intertextual or intercultural associations, but also through their evoked meaning (Baker, 2006). This means that the use of certain words, like those of different variations (be it geographical or class-related), makes the audience associate the item with that region, group of people, or era the word is peculiar to. Rowling creates the atmosphere of magic with the help of Latin words that create the impression of earlier ages (together with the quills and the thousand-year-old castle), and she does so without the impairment of the understandability of the words she uses. As Nilsen and Nilsen (2006) note, “Latin roots are such a productive source of English words that Rowling does not need to provide a glossary, nor do most translators need to find replacements” (for instance the word Lumos; p. 128). The integration of Latin words into the language is typical in English, but these words are much less an organic part of the Hungarian language. Therefore, Tóth had to decide which spells and words of Latin origin are comprehensible for the Hungarian readers and which should be replaced without losing the antiquated tone they originally carried. For the Latin-rooted words in general, a much narrower range of strategies were applied than in the case of other word types. If the original seemed understandable, and it was bearing Latin orthographical characteristics, it was borrowed with the same spelling; if it was adapted to the English spelling norms, Tóth also adjusted it to the TL orthography; and if it was considered to be incomprehensible, the translator exchanged it with another word of Latin origin that exists in Hungarian.

A Pannon Egyetem Humántudományi Kara a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia Veszprémi Területi Bizottsága Nyelv- és Irodalomtudományi Szakbizottságával közösen adott otthont 2021. november 8–9-én a Magyar Tudomány Ünnepe 2021 tiszteletére rendezett „Humán tudományok: jövőbe vezető utak” elnevezésű kétnapos nemzetközi tudományos konferenciának. A Magyar Tudományos Akadémia által minden év novemberében megrendezett Magyar Tudomány Ünnepe 2021. évi mottója „Tudomány: iránytű az élhető jövőhöz”. A Pannon Egyetem Humántudományi Kara konferenciájával szervesen illeszkedett az országos programsorozathoz. A Kar tudományos konferenciája ezen központi gondolat köré szerveződött, kiemelve a tudomány jövőformáló szerepét. Az elhangzott előadások megmutatták, hogy a nyelv-, az irodalom- és a kultúratudomány, valamint a nevelés- és a társadalomtudomány mely területeken haladta meg korábbi eredményeit, azok mennyire váltak a tudomány jövőt formáló értékekeivé. A kutatók számára a jövőben is adott a fejlődés folyamatos fenntarthatóságának lehetősége és újabb tudományos eredmények elérése, formálva az emberek gondolkodásmódjának megváltoztatásával jövőbeni életünket. A több szekcióban – 1) Nyelvtudományi, 2) Irodalom- és kultúratudományi, 3) Társadalomtudományi, 4) Neveléstudományi – elhangzott 24 hazai és külföldi kutató előadása mellett külön szekcióban 15 előadással helyet kaptak a Többnyelvűségi Nyelvtudományi Doktori Iskola doktoranduszhallgatóinak témához kapcsolódó kutatási eredményei is. Jelen tanulmánykötet nem a konferencia összefoglaló köteteként szolgál, hanem az elhangzott szerteágazó kutatási témák azóta tovább érlelt gondolatainak összegzésére vállalkozik. A kötet betekintést enged a Humántudományi Kar Intézeteiben folyó jövőformáló kutatómunkába, amelyet a különböző tudományágak, mint a nyelv-, az irodalom- és a kultúratudomány, valamint a társadalom- és a neveléstudomány egymásmellettisége és egymáshoz kapcsolódása jellemez. A tanulmányok megmutatják a különböző diszciplínák jövőformáló és így az egyes tudományterületek fejlődését előrevetítő erejét.
