Pioneer Hungarian Women in Science and Education II

A Project by Three Special Women

Telkes, having had her funding cut off by MIT, had to come up with a way of realizing her dream. The genius of a marketer that she was, she managed to secure the support of an angel investor, at a time when this expression did not have currency, in the person of “Miss Peabody.” This venture capitalist, Amelia Peabody, a well-known sculptor and philanthropist, was a spirit at least as revolutionary as Telkes herself, who enjoyed horse-riding whenever she took time off her artistic pursuits. She fell in love with the Dover countryside in New England and bought an 800-hectare property there, which she would use as hunting grounds. Telkes wrote a letter about her idea for the Sun House to Peabody who, like the aforementioned Cabot, was a member of the Boston upper class. Peabody happily obliged by supporting her project with USD 20,000 (about USD 210,000 in current value). It was using these funds that Telkes was finally able to build her house, mostly of concrete, wood, glass, metal sheeting, and aluminum. For the construction site, Peabody offered a plot of land, a part of her Dover property, named the Powisett Farm.

In this sequel to the first volume of Pioneer Hungarian Women in Science and Education published in 2022, editors Réka M. Cristian and Anna Kérchy present the portraits of twenty-two prominent Hungarian women scholars, scientists and educators who made pioneering contributions to Hungary’s scientific achievement over the centuries. Some of the women introduced in the sixteen chapters come from traditional disciplines such as pharmacy, medicine, historiography, engineering, mathematics, archeology, psychology, and philosophy, while others furthered on fields not necessarily viewed, especially at the time, as science or scholarship proper, but which are nonetheless deeply intellectual, such as physical, special needs, reform, or music education, feminism, and historic preservation. The book offers a bird’s eye view summary of the accomplishments reached and challenges faced by these exceptional Hungarian female academics and intellectuals.
