Ida B. Kutzián (1918–2001)

Ida Kutzián was born in Lublin and died in Budapest. She graduated from the Kanizsai Dorottya High School in the Újpest district of the capital in 1937. The same year, she gained admission to Pázmány Péter University, where she studied with internationally acclaimed paleoarchaeologist Ferenc Tompa. Having graduated with a humanities degree in 1941, she accepted an internship at the university’s Institute of Prehistory, where she later advanced to the position of teaching assistant and finally, in 1945, of assistant professor. Starting from 1941, she received annual fellowships until 1946, when she married economist and Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences József Bognár and opted out of the state financial aid scheme. From 1949 to 1960, she worked at the Department of Prehistory of the Hungarian National Museum, serving as deputy to department head Amália Mozsolics until 1959. Between 1958 and 1960, she was also member of the Academy’s Archaeology Research Group, then senior scientific staff at its successor, the Institute of Archaeology, as section chief and, from 1971 to 1979, as head of the Interdisciplinary Department. She retired from the Institute in 1987.

In this sequel to the first volume of Pioneer Hungarian Women in Science and Education published in 2022, editors Réka M. Cristian and Anna Kérchy present the portraits of twenty-two prominent Hungarian women scholars, scientists and educators who made pioneering contributions to Hungary’s scientific achievement over the centuries. Some of the women introduced in the sixteen chapters come from traditional disciplines such as pharmacy, medicine, historiography, engineering, mathematics, archeology, psychology, and philosophy, while others furthered on fields not necessarily viewed, especially at the time, as science or scholarship proper, but which are nonetheless deeply intellectual, such as physical, special needs, reform, or music education, feminism, and historic preservation. The book offers a bird’s eye view summary of the accomplishments reached and challenges faced by these exceptional Hungarian female academics and intellectuals.
