Pioneer Hungarian Women in Science and Education II

Alaine Polcz (1922–2007) and the Art of Dying Well

Hungarian psychologist Alaine Polcz (1922–2007) was a pioneer of thanatology—a scientific discipline that examines death and bereavement from an interdisciplinary perspective, including medical, psychological, philosophical, ethical, and sociological considerations. She was a founding member of the Hungarian Hospice Movement that established the basics of institutionalized palliative care provided to terminally ill patients and their relatives. A specialist of therapeutical methods for dying children, she also developed a play diagnosis for children with psychological disorders. Apart from extensive publications on thanatological topics such as children’s understanding of death, the psychological experience of dying and griefwork, she was the founding editor of Kharon, the Hungarian journal of thanatology, and author of a literary award-winning memoir on her personal experience of women’s wartime traumas. Her motto was a lesson learnt from the dying: only by learning how to die can we genuinely learn how to live.

In this sequel to the first volume of Pioneer Hungarian Women in Science and Education published in 2022, editors Réka M. Cristian and Anna Kérchy present the portraits of twenty-two prominent Hungarian women scholars, scientists and educators who made pioneering contributions to Hungary’s scientific achievement over the centuries. Some of the women introduced in the sixteen chapters come from traditional disciplines such as pharmacy, medicine, historiography, engineering, mathematics, archeology, psychology, and philosophy, while others furthered on fields not necessarily viewed, especially at the time, as science or scholarship proper, but which are nonetheless deeply intellectual, such as physical, special needs, reform, or music education, feminism, and historic preservation. The book offers a bird’s eye view summary of the accomplishments reached and challenges faced by these exceptional Hungarian female academics and intellectuals.
