Pioneer Hungarian Women in Science and Education II

The Last Period from the Mid-1990s: Essays, Aesthetics, Bible

In 1988–1989, the communist countries in Europe, including Hungary, executed a system change, transitioning to capitalism and liberal democracy. From that point on, the Hellers made more frequent visits back home, and they bought a flat. After Fehér died in 1994, Heller continued to commute between Budapest and the United States until 2007, when she quit her job in New York and repatriated to Hungary for good. She then realized her childhood dream of becoming a veritable world traveler, never turning down an invitation to attend and deliver talks at conferences abroad. These lectures were later collected in several books. Before she died, she undertook to compile a selection of these works for a Hungarian edition entitled Az akarat szabadsága (“Freedom of Will”), calling her writings in this volume essays, a genre that had accompanied her throughout her career and is indeed most apt to describe her habit of prose. In her last creative phase, it would be difficult to miss a certain shift in emphasis. It would be safe to identify this phase as Heller’s aesthetic period, if categorization of any kind, be it just chronological-biographical, were not out of place in respect of someone who had also become a well-known figure in Hungarian public affairs, tirelessly intervening in and debating political issues. Yet it seems as if, having completed her remarkable and compelling works in the discipline of philosophy, she had begun to write more freely about any subject that piqued her interest, including music and literature, from William Shakespeare to the historical novel. Apart from her reading journals, she published several books on the Bible, on Jewry, as well as three fascinating volumes on the history of philosophy, written specifically for university students. Heller’s passing left an unfillable void, as we lost a fine essayist, a strikingly original thinker, an esteemed publicist, an influential public figure and, first and foremost, a great philosopher.

In this sequel to the first volume of Pioneer Hungarian Women in Science and Education published in 2022, editors Réka M. Cristian and Anna Kérchy present the portraits of twenty-two prominent Hungarian women scholars, scientists and educators who made pioneering contributions to Hungary’s scientific achievement over the centuries. Some of the women introduced in the sixteen chapters come from traditional disciplines such as pharmacy, medicine, historiography, engineering, mathematics, archeology, psychology, and philosophy, while others furthered on fields not necessarily viewed, especially at the time, as science or scholarship proper, but which are nonetheless deeply intellectual, such as physical, special needs, reform, or music education, feminism, and historic preservation. The book offers a bird’s eye view summary of the accomplishments reached and challenges faced by these exceptional Hungarian female academics and intellectuals.
