Pioneer Hungarian Women in Science and Education II

A Teacher Crossing Borders

Margit Varró’s personality—an open-minded, encouraging, and thoughtful teacher who shows interest in many fields of arts—can be seen through many of her writings, but one of the most striking cases should be a short book titled Designs to Music, published in 1952. This book is a by-product of one of her courses at The Institute of Design. Although the book remains unnoticed (partially due to its small run number), it testifies to an interesting interdisciplinary experiment of music and visual arts: the book contains several sets of illustrations by her students at The Institute of Design, who transplanted their audio experience into visual elements. Even if these works may not exceed mere experiments, Varró’s classes had long-lasting effect on the students’ afterlife: one of her students, Robert Kostka, a notable American artist, gave a vivid recollection of her classes in a volume devoted to Varró in Varró Margit, Teacher of Two Continents, edited by Mariann Ábrahám. In the recollection, he also tells that he did the same sort of experiments with his students, thus opening their eyes to the art of music.

In this sequel to the first volume of Pioneer Hungarian Women in Science and Education published in 2022, editors Réka M. Cristian and Anna Kérchy present the portraits of twenty-two prominent Hungarian women scholars, scientists and educators who made pioneering contributions to Hungary’s scientific achievement over the centuries. Some of the women introduced in the sixteen chapters come from traditional disciplines such as pharmacy, medicine, historiography, engineering, mathematics, archeology, psychology, and philosophy, while others furthered on fields not necessarily viewed, especially at the time, as science or scholarship proper, but which are nonetheless deeply intellectual, such as physical, special needs, reform, or music education, feminism, and historic preservation. The book offers a bird’s eye view summary of the accomplishments reached and challenges faced by these exceptional Hungarian female academics and intellectuals.
