Business Management

Starting up, Growth, Development

Summary: International market activities of Hungarian enterprises

The main conclusion of this section is that the majority of Hungarian enterprises selling products or services in international markets do so in neighboring and other EU countries and less than 20 percent of enterprises dare to venture outside the European Union. Only a fifth of Hungarian SMEs carry out export activities, and in general their share of international market sales depends significantly on enterprise size in that the larger the enterprise, the more significant is international sales revenue. This trait generally holds true despite the growing number of early-stage international and innovative startups present in Hungary, which differ from traditional enterprises appearing in international markets. Foreign-controlled domestic enterprises should also be highlighted, since they generate a significant portion of export revenue of enterprises operating in Hungary. Finally, the main trade destinations for both Hungarian products and services are in EU member states, principally Germany and neighboring countries.
