Business Management

Starting up, Growth, Development

Development of the marketing and sales systems

Marketing departments tended to be completely separate from sales departments before the arrival of the internet. Moreover, in many industries ‘B2B’ business models tend to dominate, thus marketing tends to be regarded as an unnecessary expense by some enterprises who may negotiate contracts with clients through personal visits. In contrast, the importance of marketing was widely recognized by enterprises using ‘B2C’ models who tended to devote significant expenditure to TV and billboard advertising in the pre-internet age. ‘B2C’ businesses perhaps represent the area that is undergoing the most transformation. With growing prominence of streaming providers and online platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, younger generations can typically only be accessed via such channels and traditional methods are no longer as effective as they once were in that returns on advertising expenditure are far from assured. Online channels have more sophisticated methods of measuring advertising effectiveness such as clickable Google advertisements, but these are difficult to measure independently. Today, many SMEs use a Facebook profile instead of a website and associated domain name. However, social media requires regular maintenance activity, for which an internal or external communication associate is required.
