On the topic, see: Attila Mártonfi, ‘Átírás idegen írásrendszerű nyelvekből’ in Krisztina Laczkó, Attila Mártonfi, Helyesírás (Osiris 2006) 246-275. We prefer international transcriptions (transliterations) in this case. In the case of Russian, the Kniezsa international transcription; in the case of Japanese, Hepburn; in the case of Chinese, the most internationally accepted pinyin transcription should be followed. In the case of Ancient Greek, the scientific transcription should be followed (the one based on Latin, which is common in English); so Aischylos instead of Aiszkhülosz; Aristoteles instead of Arisztotelész/Aristotle. In the case of Modern Greek, the Latin (or Latin-based) transcription should be followed, which is common in English (not the Hungarian one!). So Hellas instead of Hellász; tzatziki instead of dzadzíki. In the case of Latin-based names, St. Thomas Aquinas in English is the correct form. (The English names of non-English persons can also be checked in the World Wide Web encyclopedias in the absence of a printed source).
