Innovation and excellence

Management methods for innovation transformation

The aim of this volume

My nearly 15 years of experience in knowledge management, university technology transfer and startup development, as managing director of the Mobilis Interactive Exhibition Centre, and my commitment to research prompted me to take a closer look at how certain companies are able to transform themselves successfully and implement significant innovations on a global scale. I have always been attracted to studying the factors of successful corporate operation and examining the steps that lead to excellence. As innovation experts and leaders, my university colleagues and I have tried to help several manufacturing companies develop into ambidextrous organisations using various methods and with varying degrees of success. Based on the case studies and methods presented in this volume, it can be said that there is no need to search long and hard for the holy grail of innovation management. You simply have to get started and, with strong leadership, build your own innovation management system through systematic steps to achieve your defined vision for the future.
One of the important assumptions of the volume and the underlying research was that even a traditional company can become an innovative organisation and that this transformation can be achieved through years of persistent work and continuous reinvestment of profits. This hypothesis can also be reversed, and the examples of Dyson and many other innovative companies show that it is by no means inevitable that an innovative company will become a traditional, "one-handed" organisation that stagnates in its development.
I am convinced that much can be learned from corporate histories and case studies, especially if the reader applies the lessons learned to their own organisation or business. For this reason, a significant part of the volume consists of case studies based on interviews with company executives. In addition to the theoretical and methodological chapters, we present several innovation management techniques that have been tested in practice, so that everyone can choose the methods they want to try out according to their own preferences and tastes.

The aim of the book "Innovation and Excellence" is to inspire and encourage company leaders, managers, and experts to initiate and implement innovation transformations with the help of professional literature and corporate case studies. Another important goal is to help develop the innovation capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises in particular by sharing simple, proven management methods that can be tested in practice.

The first part of the volume reviews the factors of corporate excellence and success, then highlights the possible sources of innovation, with a focus on the role of users and employees. The empirical section presents a detailed description of the supportive role of the workplace environment and creative working conditions based on corporate case studies (AUDI, BOSCH, MELECS). The volume concludes with a description of selected tested practical methods and management techniques that readers can try out in their own businesses.
