Innovation and excellence

Management methods for innovation transformation

Traditional companies

This group generally includes large organisations with decades of history, which often have R&D departments of considerable size and budget, as well as experience in research and innovation. They typically invest significant resources in research and development and have well-regulated processes for developing new products and services. Some of these organisations have seen better days and the importance of their sector is declining, but despite this, many companies are still very successful and generate significant profits.
However, these traditional innovators are faced with the limitations of their large corporate R&D departments and find it difficult to keep pace with the rapid changes taking place everywhere, with the result that their products often become obsolete by the time they are launched on the market. In addition, innovators who rely solely on their own research and development and innovation units miss out on many innovation opportunities related to their core activities, for example by not engaging in joint development with their customers and suppliers. The best approach for such traditional organisations is to introduce innovation initiatives related to their core activities one by one and to set up a new, independent unit to develop and implement innovation opportunities that will transform the future of the company. In the long term, decentralised operation is the goal, but temporarily, a good solution may be to set up a central unit responsible for encouraging change within the organisation and developing the appropriate innovation capabilities.
