Management methods for innovation transformation

Success factors for internal entrepreneurial programmes

The commitment and support of top management is one of the most important success factors for internal entrepreneurial programmes. In line with this, senior management must declare that supporting internal innovators and entrepreneurs and collaborating with startups is an integral part of the company's (innovation) strategy. This includes effectively communicating strategic goals to stakeholders, creating the right organisational environment and processes, training and educating employees about the benefits of innovation, its process and steps, and presenting the risks associated with sticking to the status quo.
It is critical that employees and managers involved in innovation know where the company is going, why and how. It is therefore essential that all stakeholders have a clear picture and understanding of the company's innovation strategy. To ensure transparency and build trust, the performance of innovation and internal entrepreneurial teams must be continuously measured and evaluated. Another success factor is that management gives innovation and internal entrepreneurial teams freedom and allows them to work independently and make decisions within certain limits, in line with the overall strategy. It is also important that autonomous internal entrepreneurs do not operate as isolated "free teams", but work together with other units of the company in a regulated manner when it comes to, for example, manufacturing and testing prototypes, carrying out measurements or exploring sales opportunities. These interactions must be based on mutual trust and support. Last but not least, it is also essential that internal entrepreneurs and innovators receive adequate resources from the company so that a lack of resources does not hinder the launch and implementation of radical innovations.

In addition to the above success factors, it is also worth noting that it is advisable to start corporate venturing with a smaller-scale pilot programme focusing on a topic of broad interest, such as the recycling of waste generated during production, and then increase the scale, the number of employees involved and the resources allocated to innovation. Such a startup-like introduction startup provides management with the opportunity to adjust the programme and incorporate experience into a larger-scale programme process.
