Management methods for innovation transformation

Achieving corporate goals through innovation

The company's management is able to achieve its objectives through innovation, which it sees as both a means of increasing efficiency and a way of developing new solutions. The Melecs group is a good example of an ambidextrous organisation, equally adept at smaller, everyday improvements, known as incremental innovations, and at developing new products in response to customer needs, known as radical innovations.
Melecs' raison d'être is to operate economically and achieve an increasingly low-cost structure, so that the same quality can be achieved with fewer resources and added value. As a contract manufacturer, they are constantly looking for new technical solutions that offer quality, operational and technical advantages. In addition, a significant development priority is the combination of the two, i.e. employing fewer people for a given technology, and looking for automation opportunities.
This is not implemented as a campaign, but is part of their daily operations to such an extent that savings are already planned in advance in their annual and quarterly financial plans. They plan conservatively, preparing sales and profit plans that include ways to achieve savings and cover new investments or even wage increases. Due to the cost-cutting pressure typical of contract manufacturers, they can only achieve their production and financial plans through improvements and efficiency-enhancing solutions, so they are constantly looking at which technical areas have potential. Typically, the key performance indicators (KPIs) of the manager of the identified area are also set in line with efficiency improvement targets, and they are entrusted with how to achieve them.
An example of automation implemented in recent years is a new special-purpose machine, which has replaced three employees in one shift with a minor modification to the production line. The specifications and conceptual design were developed jointly by colleagues from engineering, quality assurance and maintenance, and the machine supplier was able to design the assembly machine based on these. Functional testing of the product was also carried out by the company's own engineers. However, many companies are unable to cope with such complex challenges and outsource the task to subcontractors, which means that the client does not develop during the development process. Melecs, on the other hand, is able to contribute its own manufacturing and design experience to the developments, in addition to allocating capacities.
