Innovation and excellence

Management methods for innovation transformation

Encouraging user innovation

The company's management encourages employees to further develop the machines, equipment and technologies purchased by the company and to come up with user innovations. Quality issues always arise in a manufacturing company, so employees are constantly looking for opportunities for improvement and formulating proposals for solutions. The attitude of management is essential in implementing these proposals, as even a solution that seems good at first glance requires a lot of work before it can be introduced into production. In an open, well-functioning organisation, engineers discuss problems at length and work together to find possible solutions.
Typically, problems arise in production rather than in research and development, as in the case of the Melecs Group, where this department is only located at the Vienna headquarters. The production plant in Győr strives to provide opportunities for the implementation of less resource-intensive, innovative ideas and the dissemination of a developer mindset, as well as to showcase good examples and implemented developments within the company. They believe that this will develop the company's culture of innovation. In order to increase efficiency and quality, they constantly encourage their employees to try to find opportunities for development and improvement. In this spirit, managers often ask their employees the following question: "Are you satisfied with the way things are, knowing that they could be done better?" Experience has shown that this type of "nudging" works and has led to a number of significant developments.
They do not want to sell the improved machines, equipment and technologies for money. The idea spreads free of charge within the group, and this is how the transfer of know-how takes place. With regard to their external partners, they also consider it more important for the supplier and manufacturer to learn from the machine and build more value into the next generation of products.
The dedicated organisational manager responsible for user innovations is the Lean and Kaizen manager. They do not determine in advance how many employee ideas they expect each year, because Melecs considers it more important to encourage thinking, to introduce a few valuable ideas, and to promote such developments. They rarely work with external partners, but there have been cases where there were no internal resources available to implement a particular development. Project-based collaborations work better when specialised knowledge or tools are required for implementation. In the area of cooperation, implementation and introduction into production are the main motivating factors. They do not enter into a development cooperation just because some form of support is available.
