Management methods for innovation transformation

3. "Invented for life" – Bosch's activities to encourage innovation1

Robert Bosch founded his workshop for precision mechanics and electrical engineering in Stuttgart in 1886. As a result of continuous growth over the past century, the group has expanded into 60 countries around the world and has grown into a global company with more than 400,000 employees and revenues of EUR 78 billion. Particularly impressive is the research and development activity of the group, which is still privately owned, with 76,100 highly qualified researchers and developers (almost one in five Bosch employees!) working on cutting-edge technological developments in a wide range of fields.
The group's Hungarian subsidiary, Robert Bosch Kft., was established in 1991 as a sales centre for the distribution and customer service of automotive components, automotive diagnostic equipment, power tools, thermal technology equipment and security systems. The Budapest site also performs regional tasks as the sales centre for South-Eastern Europe. In addition, Bosch's European Distribution Centre is also located in Budapest.
The Bosch Group, consisting of eight independent companies working in close strategic cooperation, is one of Hungary's largest foreign industrial employers. In the 2021 financial year, it achieved net sales of HUF 1,711 billion (about EUR 4,752 billion), of which HUF 273 billion (about EUR 758) came from sales outside the group to the Hungarian market. It spent HUF 93 billion (about EUR 258 million) on research and development, focusing on electromobility, autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence. According to data from the end of 2021, the Bosch Group in Hungary employs more than 17,000 people, about 10 per cent more than a year earlier. Among its employees, 3,200 developers are working on the technologies of the future.
Bosch technologies are present in many areas of life, whether in cars, at home or at work. Thanks to its extensive technical expertise, Bosch develops intelligent mobility solutions in the fields of hardware, software and services.
The Bosch Development Centre in Budapest has grown to become the group's second largest automotive development centre in Europe. The centre employs around 3,000 development engineers, more than 1,000 of whom are specifically involved in the development of autonomous vehicles. Founded in 2005 with just a few employees, the organisation's most important research is in the fields of artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and electromobility. In recent years, the Budapest Development Centre has produced numerous patents related to artificial intelligence and self-driving vehicles. Most of the patented technologies help self-driving cars to analyse their environment more accurately and predict the movements of other vehicles.

1 The case study is based on interviews with Mátyás Pótsa and Márton Hidas, managers at the Bosch Development Centre in Budapest, as well as information available on Bosch.hu and the Bosch grow platform. https://www.bosch.hu and https://www.growplatform.com (Date of access: 20 May 2022).
