Innovation and excellence

Management methods for innovation transformation

Application of management practices that encourage innovative behaviour

The internal news portal regularly provides employees with overviews of industry and technology trends and presentations of new technologies. There is also a quarterly newsletter written by employees for employees, which features news about both external and internal development results. Podcasts on interesting topics are also available on the internal network, as well as TED-style talks prepared by employees in an engaging manner. In addition, internal awareness-raising presentations are held, in which Bosch employees report on various technological breakthroughs and outstanding achievements.
The knowledge management department supports and encourages knowledge sharing within the company. They operate an internal network ("core teams") involving experienced employees who collect development results in key areas such as artificial intelligence and self-driving technology, which are then shared with other departments within the company. However, it is very important to emphasise that this type of knowledge sharing and innovation activity is effective when it is not imposed from above, but when employees feel motivated to collect and share new information. The company provides a framework for knowledge sharing and encourages employees to take an interest in the shared technological information and advances. It is important that the framework is loosely defined and that employees do not feel compelled to participate.
The mindset of management and the organisational culture are particularly important in relation to development and innovation activities. Employees are given sufficient time to acquire and share knowledge, which presupposes that management does not keep track of their every minute. Experience shows that if managers give their development colleagues sufficient space to pursue their individual interests, if there is an atmosphere of trust within the company, and if management focuses on people, then innovative proposals will follow. However, this requires long-term thinking and stepping outside the challenges of the present, which presupposes a secure financial background and efficient operational functioning and production.
