Management methods for innovation transformation

Bosch Innovation Framework

The Bosch Innovation Framework is based on the Lean Startup method. It helps to explore new business opportunities in an iterative manner and defines criteria that help to evaluate the progress and maturity of the innovation process. The grow platform focuses on the further development of internal development projects that have solved significant customer problems and offer outstanding global business opportunities. Ideally, the research results or technology underlying the startup were developed at one of Bosch's research centres, their applicability was proven (proof-of-concept), and then one of Bosch's business divisions formulated the business need or opportunity for which the employees developed a business concept and initial business model. Once the concept has been validated, the startup team members can develop viable prototypes (MVP) within the framework of the incubation programme. Bosch Business Innovations guides idea owners and intrapreneurs with dedicated programs through seed, growth, and scale stages, as well as providing targeted expertise and resources (see Figure 15).

The internal innovation project to be selected must meet four criteria:
  • relevance to one of the strategic areas defined by Bosch;
  • a sufficiently developed concept that has reached a certain level of maturity;
  • unicorn potential, i.e. a business with significant global sales (preferably USD 1 billion within 10 years) can be built on the business model;
  • the startup project is led by high-performing team members who have a high level of professional and soft skills and are capable of continuous learning and collaboration.
