Management methods for innovation transformation

Innovation strategy direction: independent product development and manufacturing

In addition to its high-quality supplier tasks and unique, small and large-scale component machining with excellent references, the MouldTech Systems corporate group is increasingly looking to move towards its own product development. In addition to its current B2B business model and position as a supplier to large companies, it wants to work directly with the market (B2C). The reason for this is that it wants to gain a larger share of the product price and profit than it can achieve as a component manufacturer and supplier. The reason for this is that, as a contract manufacturer, their revenue, including profit, may be approximately one-fifth to one-sixth of the price of a consumer product available in stores, while the majority of the profit goes to other members of the value chain.
They want to compete not only on the price of the products and components they manufacture, but also on their quality and functionality. This requires innovation. Continuous efficiency improvements are no longer enough. In line with their strategic goals, they are consciously expanding their development team, bringing engineers home from abroad in order to create a creative workshop dedicated to product development. In addition to the two manufacturing and machining units, their research laboratory is located in a separate building, where various engineers work on development topics.
Since the company was founded, they have been thinking in terms of ecosystems and have been involved in the development of industrial development plans for the region for 10-15 years. They validate components and test compliance with standards together with their partners in the competence centre they have built, which also provides services to businesses in the region.
Engaged in contract work, custom machine manufacturing and machining activities, the company has also experienced an acceleration of its product development goals due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Even before that, however, they were actively looking for development topics and breakthrough points, primarily those that are relevant to Western Europe but can also be implemented in Hungary. They have formulated the development of technologies and products related to environmental protection and precision agriculture as a strategic direction.
Their first independent development was a spraying drone based on special technology that can be used in agriculture. In collaboration with Hungarian universities and researchers, they tested equipment that produces the ideal spray droplet size, which can be used to spray areas and forests that are difficult or impossible to access with traditional agricultural machinery in an economical and efficient manner. They manufactured the prototypes of the spray nozzles themselves and patented the related unique solutions. The market has also confirmed the rationality of their development, as there is continuous demand for their product. The purchase and use of the spraying drone pays for itself within a year for farmers, and at the same time, thanks to the reduced amount of spray used, they are able to comply with increasingly stringent EU standards.
