Innovation and excellence

Management methods for innovation transformation

Innovation theatre

Another important strategic issue is how the results of various popular innovation activities, such as corporate idea competitions, hackathons, design thinking workshops, and project initiatives, are integrated into the organisation. Activities referred to in international jargon as "innovation theatre" are usually accompanied by great excitement, with enthusiastic participants and jury members who generally enjoy themselves at these events. They can even be considered productive, as after the creative activities are completed, the host organisation or unit is enriched with a wealth of ideas and even a few prototypes, but it is very rare for them to be continued and implemented.
One of the main problems with activities related to innovation theatre is that all players in a given sector have more or less similar development ideas. In fact, it is not the greatness of the ideas or their number, but the quality of their implementation that distinguishes successful innovative enterprises from their peers. If the management of a company views creative actions related to innovation theatre as merely a supplement to its core activities, a kind of bonus, a "nice-to-have" activity, then it will not allocate sufficient human and financial resources to try out and test the ideas that arise. However, without the commitment of company management, even the most promising ideas will not make it to market launch.
