A terhesség alatt rendkívül sok egyed pusztul el, amit azonban nem veszteségnek kell tekintenünk, hanem a hibás egyedek kiszűrésének. Minél súlyosabb a kóros eltérés, annál hamarabb történik az elhalás. A nagyon korán elhaltak felszívódhatnak és esetleg nyomuk sem marad, csak az ultrahangvizsgálat bizonyítja, hogy amit láttunk, eltűnik a szemünk elől. A szervezet igyekszik az anyát a további viseléstől megkímélni. A terhesség elején a fogantatások eredményeinek 50%-a hibás, ami a természet szelekciójának következtében a terhesség végére, a szülés idejére 0,5%-ra zsugorodik. A kóros egyedeket a korai képalkotó eljárások már a terhesség első felében kimutatják, így az orvosnak és a családnak lehetősége van a kihordás vagy a terhességmegszakítás mellett dönteni. Figyelembe kell venni a rokkantság súlyosságát, kezelhetőségét és az egyén várható életminőségét.

A magzati betegségek diagnosztikája, sőt a kezelési lehetőségek továbbra is fejlődnek, ami nézetünket is sokszor befolyásolni képes. Könyvünk a jelenlegi állapotot tükrözi, ami azonban azt is jelenti, hogy a tudásunk folyamatosan bővül. A holnapi tudásunk a maiak alapjain nyugszik – ezért elődeink vívmányait lebecsülni nem szabad. Sokszor láthatjuk azt, hogy az új technikák tanúsítják azt, amit elődeink már sejtettek, de csak az új eljárások tették lehetővé a bizonyítást. (a szerzők)
