Road Traffic Modeling and Simulation

Tutorial

SUMO programming via MATLAB TraCI

SUMO offers XML based configuration (as introduced above) through of which one can design the geometry of any type of road networks and set up simulations in a simple way. However, for several problems this option is not satisfying. This is the case, for example, when the user aims to access and manipulate SUMO objects during the simulation in a dynamic way. To this end, an additional interface called Sumo TraCI (Traffic Control Interface) [21] is offered based on TCP communication which can be programmed in several languages (e.g. Python, MATLAB, Java, etc.). TraCI applies a TCP based client-server architecture to provide access to SUMO, i.e. to control and modify a simulation process online. It also enables to retrieve information from any of the elements of the simulation network, such as vehicles, road links, junctions, traffic lights, etc.

On the one hand, the workbook serves the English Master Program of Autonomous Vehicle Control Engineer at the Faculty of Transportation Engineering and Vehicle Engineering of Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The exercises provide basic tutorial training supporting the course of Road Traffic Modeling and Control. On the other hand, the traffic modeling and simulation basics given in this book also lay the groundwork for practical and theoretical contributions in the field of intelligent traffic systems and traffic control.
