Discrete Feedback Systems 1.

Classical Control

Introduction

Automatic control is an important and integral part of in any field of engineering and science. Typically, the need to use modern linear control arises when working with models which are complex, multiple input multiple output, or when optimization of performance is a concern. While construction of automatic machines dates back at least to the time of ancient Greeks, as far as automatic control is concerned, a historical example cited in many texts is James Watt’s fly-ball governor from the 18th century, where the control objective is to ensure that the speed of rotation is approximately constant. As the fly-balls rotate so they determine, via the valve, how much steam is supplied; the faster the rotation – the less steam is supplied. The rate of steam supplied then governs, via the piston and flywheel, the speed of rotation of the fly-balls. Although tight limits of operation, in terms of speed variation, can be obtained with such a device a possible disadvantage of the feedback scheme is shown: oscillations can occur in the system output, i.e., the speed of rotation, which would not occur if the system were connected in open-loop mode.

Tartalomjegyzék

Kiadó: Akadémiai Kiadó

Online megjelenés éve: 2019

ISBN: 978 963 454 372 5

The aim of the book is to provide a well-rounded exposure to analysis, control and simulation of discrete-time systems. Theoretical techniques for studying discrete-time linear systems with particular emphasis on the properties and design of sampled data feedback control systems are introduced. This book is intended to be used as a textbook in our MSc and PhD courses. We have tried to balance the broadness and the depth of the material covered in the book. The interested reader is also sent to consult the publications of the references list.
