Placenta

The placenta is composed two parts, a maternal and a fetal portion. The maternal part can be further divided to basal lamina and septal structures protruding from that. The fetal part of the placenta is composed of chorionic membrane and chorionic villi. There are two kinds of villi, fixed and free ones. The fixed villi connect the maternal and fetal portions of the placenta. There are approximately 10-25 fixed villi in the placenta and multiple free villi. A joint name of a single fixed and multiple adjacent free villi is cotyledon.
