Taking into consideration the transnational dimension and the aspects of the Cold War is not very common in the Hungarian history of education, although this approach can enrich our knowledge in the field. My study is based on the archives of the US Embassy in Budapest, and the qualitative methodology is to show which ways the Americans collected information about Hungarian schools, universities and connecting political decision making-mechanisms. Furthermore, I analyse the thematic focuses and evaluations. I concentrate on the Library of the Embassy and its working staff, who made special work with translating, organizing and transmitting important educational decrees and regulations; made summaries and tried to get personal information. In my research, I selected 29 documents, most of them simple translations from the Hungarian Official Gazette, available to everyone in those years – they transported them to the US, without evaluations. My real interest is related to the reports, which use other data, contained comments, informal sources or the long-time trends summaries and compilations, created by the American officials. First, I will introduce my sources, then I articulate the theoretical-methodological background and the problems; the historical time and the contexts of the documents. The main part of this paper is describing the Embassy and analyses of the documents, finally, I will conclude my experience and outline some new research trends, using these directions in the history of education.
