Management Consultancy in Central and Eastern Europe

Consultancy in a Global Context

Human Relations

The second wave was the human relations trend that emerged in the ‘20s of the last century. Its best-known representative was George Elton Mayo, who noticed the link between efficiency and mental health, and then made suggestions for reducing work-related stress. He had been trained as a physician (though he never completed medical school) and worked as a psychotherapist at the end of WWI, so his scientific approach was that of an inductive clinician, collecting data and looking for trends. His combination of employee interviews with operational efficiency studies, most notably the Hawthorne studies, showed the importance of group dynamics in performance, as well as communication by leaders – which later became known as organizational culture. His use of open storytelling by employees, as opposed to structured interviews, fell out of favor for several decades, but is now becoming more widely used again (Sanders, 2021).
