Overview of Information Technologies that Support Knowledge Management

The relationship between knowledge management and information technology has been analyzed by many from the beginning. Researchers are not unanimous about the role technology plays in knowledge management. According to McDermott, the rapid development of information technology has stimulated the development of knowledge management but is not a determining factor (McDermott, 1999). He considers the design of knowledge management systems based solely on IT tools and concepts as a trap. Information technology can usually play a mediating, facilitating role in the exploration, sharing, dissemination and application of knowledge, but in some cases it can also play a key role. As stated by Bipin Junarkar, Director of Knowledge Management at Monsanto (1997): “Technology plays a very vital role in knowledge management, but technology itself cannot make knowledge management happen.”
