Management Consultancy in Central and Eastern Europe

Consultancy in a Global Context

Establishment of Corporate Consulting

In Slovakia, the terms audit (auditor), advisory, or consulting are used for consulting activities. This suggests that consulting is primarily understood as an advisory activity on taxation, tax optimization, and accounting issues. There are several reasons for this development. Slovakia is one of the smallest states in Central and Eastern Europe and therefore the size of the consulting market is small. The real development of a market economy only started in the 2000s due to domestic reasons. There was no functioning stock exchange in the country. A few local large companies often try to solve strategic problems by using their relationships. For the majority of medium-sized companies, the primary objective is survival and careful acquisition of markets. Both types of companies rarely call on outside investors to finance their assets and prefer bank loans. Acquisitions are usually carried out by foreign companies that make strategic decisions abroad, and the same applies to the selection of senior executives. Therefore, there is less need for external corporate management consulting, so greater emphasis is placed on solving ongoing administrative issues such as tax or IT consulting and accounting. Full outsourcing of such activities is also common. The scope of activities of smaller advisory firms is often limited to this type of activity.
