Mobility and active lifestyle in tourism

Rail

Rail transports large volumes of goods and people. The main advantages of this transport mode are large capacities, relatively high weather resilience, relatively low costs and environmental soundness. Investment needs are high and, in general, there is no door-to-door transport on rail, but as an intermodal leg of a journey, rail is relatively fast. Thus, current transport policies in the European Union seek to promote rail as a sustainable solution to carry freight and passengers, wherever it may be competitive with other modes. In the case of passenger transport, these are 1) urban and suburban mobility, as commuter rail services may transport mass of people from the catchment area to busy city centres, and 2) both regional and long-distance travelling, taking into consideration that the speed, comfort and reliability of modern train services may be high. The industrial revolution fastened the evolution of transport on tracks, which led to the construction of the backbone of current railway networks by the early 20th century. In the 21st century, particularly the high-speed services make rail attractive for tourists.

Passenger transport merging different sub-sectors such as urban and road transport (e.g., coaches, automobiles, public transport), rail transport (e.g., luxury tourist trains), water transport (e.g., maritime or river cruises), and aviation (e.g., airlines, special air transport options – such as ballooning or hang gliding) is the cornerstone of tourism. The strong relationship between the fields of tourism requires an understanding of the theoretical background of tourism. In the first part of the book, the essentials of tourism, transport, and their interactions are presented. The book also focuses on innovative transport solutions (e.g., automation, shared mobility) that could transform passenger transport and tourism in the near future. In the second part, the characteristics of active tourism, one of the most emerging areas of recreational tourism are presented in detail. Based on the current trends, the conceptual framework, the supply and demand side of recreation and sport tourism are described in detail. The main trends, drivers and achievements of sports tourism are illustrated by Hungarian and international examples.
