Mobility and active lifestyle in tourism

Introduction

The purpose of this chapter is to provide readers with an overview of sport-related tourism development closely tied to the geographical resource base of a destination. First, it is an explanation of concepts of landscape and environment in general. This is followed by how landscape becomes a resource base for sports tourism and what kind of impacts need to be managed. These topics are relevant because the extent to which tourists find a destination attractive is strongly influenced by the physical environment including landscapes and climate. Many sports are closely tied to the physical geography of a destination. Destinations may be managed and promoted to develop new or exploit existing links to specific sports. The sports tourism development potential of a destination is also determined by cultural influences on the landscape. Event sports tourism development at a destination requires, in most cases, constructed resources including sport facilities and tourism infrastructure. An understanding of the spatial elements of sports tourism development is incomplete without some consideration of the physical environment. This chapter offers a starting point to the understanding of resource requirements and impacts of sports tourism development. Natural and built resources for sports tourism, and impacts associated with each, are here considered.

Passenger transport merging different sub-sectors such as urban and road transport (e.g., coaches, automobiles, public transport), rail transport (e.g., luxury tourist trains), water transport (e.g., maritime or river cruises), and aviation (e.g., airlines, special air transport options – such as ballooning or hang gliding) is the cornerstone of tourism. The strong relationship between the fields of tourism requires an understanding of the theoretical background of tourism. In the first part of the book, the essentials of tourism, transport, and their interactions are presented. The book also focuses on innovative transport solutions (e.g., automation, shared mobility) that could transform passenger transport and tourism in the near future. In the second part, the characteristics of active tourism, one of the most emerging areas of recreational tourism are presented in detail. Based on the current trends, the conceptual framework, the supply and demand side of recreation and sport tourism are described in detail. The main trends, drivers and achievements of sports tourism are illustrated by Hungarian and international examples.
